Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It is often called "holistic massage". It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and, most importantly, to create complete relaxation in mind and body. Lots of flowing strokes are used which helps to soothe nerve endings and release toxins built up in muscles.
Swedish massage is the foundation for all other types of Western massage, including aromatherapy, sports and deep tissue massage.
