What should I expect on a first massage session? Initially I have a free consultation session with all my clients at their first appointment. You will be asked to fill in a client consultation form, giving details of any medical conditions, allergies, muscular aches and pains etc. All information given on the form will remain confidential. You will then need to sign and date to say you are happy to proceed with the treatment. Consultations are important as there are some medical conditions that will require careful consideration before you can receive a massage. We will then have an informal discussion to see if you have any areas that need particular work, ie, tense shoulders, tight hamstrings. I take a holistic approach to all treatments, therefore I will adapt the massage to suit your individual requirements. After this consultation the massage treatment will take place.
What should I wear for a massage? For a full body massage, you will need to remove your clothing, keeping only your lower underwear on. I will leave the room and you will be able to undress in your own time with complete privacy. After undressing you will lie on the couch under the towel provided. You will be covered by a towel throughout the massage and your modesty will be preserved at all times. Only the area being massaged is uncovered and the rest of your body will remain covered with the towel. Clients having an Indian head massage will remain fully clothed, only needing to have their neck and shoulders exposed. It's ideal to wear a vest top so the straps can be pushed down on either side of the shoulders.
What do I do during a massage treatment? Some people who have never had a massage before worry about what they will do during the massage. The answer is to make yourself comfortable and enjoy the experience. Many people close their eyes and relax totally during a session; others prefer to talk - it's up to you. Throughout the session please feel free to ask questions at any time. If there is anything you like or dislike please tell me and I will adapt the massage to suit you.
How long will a treatment last? Back massages last either 30 or 45 minutes, whilst body massages last either 60 or 90 minutes.
What if I feel self-conscious about my body? Just about everyone feels self-conscious about their body in some way or another. Don't let this stop you having a massage! Massage is a pleasurable experience and can really help to soothe both aches and pains and to relieve stress. Massage therapists have seen all kinds of bodies in all shape and sizes and are not there to make judgments. Please don't let feeling self-conscious about your weight or other body issues be a reason not to have a massage.
After-care advice You may feel relaxed and tired after a massage. Take care if you are driving or working. Drink plenty of water after the treatment to replace lost fluids and avoid dehydration. This will help eliminate the toxins from your body. Avoid alcohol, smoking and excessive tea or coffee drinking as this can have a dehydrating effect and will re-introduce toxins back into your body. Avoid eating a heavy meal after the treatment. Eat lightly for the rest of the day, this will allow your body to concentrate on natural healing and encourage detoxification. You should always allow yourself sufficient time before and after a massage treatment to ensure that you are not rushing.
